Local Food

Why have a food group?

Most of us rely on the supermarkets for our food, buying on price and often buying  food which has travelled hundreds of miles .     But how sustainable is this?  What will happen when oil prices go up?  What effect will global changes in weather patterns have on food supply?

Join us to think about the issues and discover how we can make change here in Shrewsbury.

Wheat Prices have doubled in the last 2 monthsWheat prices have doubled in the last two months, notching up the fastest food price rise seen in the last 20 years. A severe drought and fires in Russia, the world’s largest country and one of the top five exporters of wheat, have sent prices skyward. http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=90055  3rd August 2010

 Autumn Events

Shrewsbury World Food Day 16th October

A celebration of World Food Day to get everyone in Shrewsbury to think about food issues around the globe and what we can do about them.  Food, fun and music will be happening in every corner of town  -  fish back in Fish Street, butchery in Butcher’s Row, films, tastings in the Indoor Market, food jugglers.   Food producers, retailers and restaurants as well as all the town’s groups with an interest in food are being invited to join in.  Joint event with local charity  Self Help Africa.

In the evening, there will be a celidh at the Morris Hall, sponsored by Salopian Brewery.  This will raise funds for Self Help Africa and TTS.

Get involved!  Join in the fun and lend a hand during the day – help make it have a real impact.  Come to our meeting for volunteers at 7.30 pm , on Tuesday 7th September at Self Help Africa’s offices just next to Paulo’s restaurant  Westgate House, Dickens Court, Hills Lane, Shrewsbury, SY1 1QU.  If you can’t make the meeting, get in touch with Katy on kvanderson@btconnect.com.

Or just get 16th October in your diary as a great day to come into town to celebrate food and take steps towards a more just and food secure world.
