Kicks off on the 26th of Jan with Call of The Hummingbird – In gorgeous central Brazil, a rag-tag group of 10000 Mayan calendar followers, bioregionalists, permaculture experts, Rastafarians, alternative health practitioners and NGO executives work towards a do-it-yourself action plan to make the world a better place in 13 days and prepare for 2012. Welcome to “Survivor” for social change addicts, where consensus is the only way to make decisions. Anyone can speak. For as long as they like about whatever they want. And they do. “Call of the Hummingbird” is a fascinating exploration of new paradigm thinking about organizing for social change. Caution – some scenes contain nudity!

And then Beyond the Pole on the 23rd of Feb – ‘A quirky, moving and
very funny tale of two friends that set out on a heroic trip to the
North Pole only to discover that before they can become heroes, they
must first become men.’
‘The first Carbon Neutral, Organic, Vegetarian, expedition EVER to
attempt the North Pole’..

More than 930 people brought their cardboard to us on Saturday,  sending a strong message to the Council that kerbside collections need to be reinstated.  We’re still just waiting for the final figures but it should be at least 5 tonnes of cardboard prevented from going into landfill.  Thanks to everyone who gave us their cardboard and  the generosity of our 48 volunteers and local companies giving their time and resources for free,  we’ll have raised some cash for the Hospice and Hope House.  Watch this space for the final scores on the doors and news of what happens next on cardboard collections for Shropshire.

In the meantime,  please:

    1. sign the petition for kerbside collection on  http://petitions.shropshire.gov.uk/petitions.ti/cardboard
    2. hang on to your cardboard if you have space; collecting cardboard for your neighbours, friends and workmates if you can; and
    3. share car loads to the Household Recycling Centre or collection points at Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s to keep those cardboard miles down.

Thanks!   Ali and Katy

2011 has seen the Coton Community Allotments come to fruition! The Coton Community Allotment Association has been formed to run the new allotments on Corporation Lane. The Association is renting half a hectare of land from a local landowner, Berwick Estate. The lease has been agreed for 9 years. The allotments have been awarded funding through the Local Joint Committee to the tune of £10000. Over the summer there have been various work days and a few individual members have worked hard at other times to clear the site. The money has now been released and the site is now nearly fenced, the access is nearly finished, the hard standing has gone in for the communal shed and the water supply is on.

The works should be finished by the end of this month Oct 2011 and then the individual plots will be marked out. There are expected to be a total of 40 x 50 square metre plots. Part of the site is to be set aside to become a community garden and hopefully local children will get involved. If you are interested in taking a plot please contact Phil and Libby tel: 01743 231985 to register your interest.  (Note that preference will be made to prospective plotholders from the Coton Hill/Town Centre area.)

Shrewsbury Hydro are joint winners in our category in energyshare launch fund vote! So, we will receive the £15,000 we applied for to carry out the environmental surveys at Shrewsbury weir.
